There is more to creating a brand and building awareness for it than designing a nice logo and tagline. In fact, a logo and tagline are just the icons of a brand. Actually building a brand takes planning, time and commitment. Here are a few helpful tips to help you get started.

Be specific

First, figure out what your company, or brand, stands for and define your brand promises. Brand promises should be realistic and you should be able to communicate them clearly. For example, it's not enough to state that your brand stands for quality. That's a broad statement that any company can make. How does your brand live and breathe quality on a day-to-day basis? Those specifics are what will differentiate you from your competition. Are you the low cost leader; or the higher priced super dependable, great warranty, etc. You'd be surprised how many salespeople are selling one, and are actually the other one!

Believe in yourself

Once you know what your brand stands for and promises, don't be afraid to state it confidently. You have to convince prospective customers that you are the leader in your area of expertise. Don't be shy about how you communicate your message. Say it with powerful words, startling images and deep conviction.

Be consistent

Once you have your brand message down, develop a marketing plan to get it out there and don't waiver. Chances are that as soon as you're tired of your message, your customers are just starting to recognize it. A consistent message, conveyed through multiple methods of communication, is critical to building awareness for your brand.

Demonstrate integrity

These days, a little integrity goes a long way. People respond well to honesty. If you communicate truthfully and deliver on your promises, your business will be rewarded for it. Only make guarantees that you know you can keep. It won't be long before word gets out that your brand is the one that can be trusted.

Be memorable and be relentless

Get your brand message out there and then keep hammering it home. People are inundated with a myriad of messages each day so repetition is the key. It's not enough to simply stand out from the competition. You must be remembered as well. Don't ease up on communicating your brand promise and building your image. Your efforts will be rewarded in time.
